The Independent Review Board (IRB) is designed to assist the Chief of Police in the deliberative process in determining an appropriate level of discipline for instances of sustained misconduct by subject members. The IRB may also review events that draw significant community interest.
– Each IRB panel that is convened will consist of four (4) civilian members and four (4) Police Personnel.
– The City strives to appoint members that represent its diverse population.
– THE IRB process, although significantly supported by the Aurora Police Department, is a function of the Human Resources Department under the control of the Director of Human Resources or designee.
Board Information
When the IRB was implemented, terms were not staggard and therefore some members were asked to serve a four-year term instead of a three-year term, including Bittel, Mayes and Todd, who all remain on the Board today. New appointments were to be made in January 2021 but due to several other efforts to increase civilian oversight in policing, the decision was made to hold off terming and recruiting new members and to date remains on hold.
